I was invited to create a short film for the new Fucking Different Generations XXX anthology, on an intergenerational theme. The producer KIKI suggested that I team up with another Gen X filmmaker, Shine Louise Houston. I’ve worked with Shine for years, most recently as Assistant Director. This would be the first time we’d collaborated on an idea together.
My initial idea was to invite additional voices from different generations, specifically older ones, to collaborate with us by sending audio and visual elements for us to weave into a short experimental documentary. I suggested the visual, video prompt of hands. Besides being erotic, they are also reflection of gender, culture, and age. The actions the hands take can give options for participants to share something personal or performative. For the audio component, Shine formed the question: What have I learned about sex?
Shine and I both participated with audio and video as well. I had a trip back home to visit family planned so I took video clips of my hands while hiking with my dad and feeling the texture of ferns and spores, while with my mother running errands for my grandmother, driving with my hand out the car window riding the lift of the wind. As for what I’ve learned about sex? It’s such a hard question, as I still have so far to go! I got on my rambling soapbox about how what consent teaches us in sexual relationships can extend to professional relationships and perhaps have the potential to bring about world peace. A kid can dream.
HANDMEDOWN is an experimental micro-documentary and multigenerational handing down of queer sexual wisdom and whimsy.
A collaboration by nonbinary actor Jiz Lee and queer visual artist Shine Louise Houston created for the anthology Fucking Different Generations, HANDMEDOWN weaves the videos and voices of luminary Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennial icons: Gender Outlaw author Aunty Kate Bornstein, Tantric educator Barbara Carrellas, lesbian pornographer Nan Kinney, Miss Major filmmakers StormMiguel Florez and Annalise Ophelian, gay pornographer Todd Verow, Bay Area BDSM expert LT Thunder Hawk, ecosexual artists Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens with Joy Brooke Fairfield and Candi X, and erotic filmmaker Bonaventure Tain with gay adult artists Ryuji Suzuki and Jenny Lai.
Watch HANDMEDOWN at the BLUSH San Francisco PornFilmFestival.
Fucking Different Generations XXX
A queer anthology that explores sexuality, intimacy, and identity across age groups. Conceived as a collaborative project, the film brings together filmmakers from different generations, each directing a short segment portraying encounters between younger and older men. Through these stories, the film examines how attitudes toward desire, relationships, and queer identity shift over time. Moments of curiosity, misunderstanding, attraction, and vulnerability reveal both the gaps and the connections between generations shaped by different social climates. By juxtaposing perspectives formed in eras of repression with those emerging in more open contexts, the film reflects on how LGBTQ+ experiences evolve while shared needs for intimacy, recognition, and connection remain constant. The result is a provocative and intimate mosaic about age, memory, and the changing landscape of queer life.
